Electro (also known as electro-funk) is a form of electronic dance music which emerged alongside hip hop in the early 1980s. Many electro tracks are also considered to be hip hop since their relation (and time period) is so close. Electro music is mainly meant for 'breakdancing'. Groups and artisits in this genre include Newcleus, Planet Patrol, Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Cybotron.

In the 1980s, hip hop, freestyle, and electro all 'lived under the same roof' to some extent. In other words, these three genres were closely knit and became intertwined with one another. The three types of music belonged to the same branch of urban music.
